Petra begun its slow decline after its annexation to the Roman Empire in 106 AD, becoming abandoned altogether after the 14th century. It was completely lost to the West until a Swiss traveler rediscovered it in 1812... I am trying to imagine the awe and wonder of this traveler who chances upon such a marvelous place — so extensive in its grandeur and so full of imagination...
